05/18/09 - SHERIFF’S OFFICERS WILL NO LONGER BE KNOWN AS BROWNSHIRTS

Monmouth County Sheriff's Officers will no longer be called brownshirts, as a uniform makeover begins. On May 18, all Lieutenants, Sergeants and Officers swapped out those familiar brown uniforms, for dark blue shirts and pants. The entire cost of the change was funded by the members of the Law Enforcement Division themselves.

"This uniform change conveys a more traditional look for law enforcement," said Sheriff Kim Guadagno. "I was quick to endorse a request by the division to change the uniforms at no expense to the taxpayers."

A new patch with a gold star and a red, white and blue background is affixed to the uniform tops.

The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office is one of the last sheriff's offices in the state to make the change from the brown uniforms which were designed in the early 1980s. The new uniforms, called "LAPD Blue" are less expensive and easier to maintain.
