What is 9-1-1?

Calls to 9-1-1 reach police, fire or emergency medical services any time 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Dial 9-1-1 when you feel life or property is in danger or you need emergency services.

How can I dial 9-1-1?

Calling 9-1-1 is free and can be dialed from any home phone, pay phone or cellular phone. Home phones are generally known as "landline" phones. These phones are connected and plugged into a jack inside the home in order to work. Landline phones can also be portable inside the home and get their signal from base station that is plugged into a phone jack. Pay phones are located in public places and have push buttons or dials. Cellular phones are completely portable and are not wired to a jack like home phones. Cellular phones can be used anywhere including inside a home, in a car or anywhere outside. When using a cellular phone, give your location, as that information is not automatically provided to the 9-1-1 telecommunicator.

How does 9-1-1 work?

A 9-1-1 telecommunicator determines the appropriate agencies to respond to your emergency and helps you until services arrive. The telecommunicator will answer "9-1-1, what is your emergency? At this point, remain calm, speak clearly and provide the following information:

The exact nature and location of the emergency.
The phone number you are calling from.
Your name and address, if requested.
