BICYCLE SAFETY TIPS FROM
THE MONMOUTH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
  • Before you get on your bike, put on a helmet
  • Use caution at all times, especially before riding onto a new street.
  • Obey stop, yield and all traffic signs.
  • Check behind you before swerving, turning or changing lanes.

FACT:
Brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability in bicycle crashes.

FACT:
A bicycle helmet protects your child's skull, brain and face.

HELMET SAFETY TIPS
  • Purchase a helmet that meets the safety standards of the American National Standards Institute.
  • Choose a helmet that fits well prior to adjustment. Avoid a helmet a child will "grow into.
  • Wear the helmet level on the head, not tilted back on the crown or pulled low over the forehead.
  • When helmet is fitted properly on child's head, only two fingers should fit under the chinstrap.
  • Remind your child to always wear a helmet and set an example by wearing a helmet at all times.
