HOMELAND SECURITY
SAFETY SUGGESTIONS
Notice your Environment
- Always be aware of your surroundings and people around you.
- Trust your instincts. Talk to your local law enforcement agency about any suspicious activities you've witnessed.
- Report evidence of illegal breaking and entering you've noted in a home, business, or vehicle.
- Be wary of unnecessary observing, photographing or seeking information about public utilities or government buildings.
- Keep an eye on the parking lots and garages you frequent. Talk to the manager of the lots or a police officer about cars that appear abandoned or broken into.
- Call local authorities if you find unusual abandoned packages, boxes, or luggage.
- Don't open suspicious mailings, irregularly shaped packages, or any odd mail you were not expecting to receive.
Monitor your Health
- Make an appointment with your health care provider if sudden or unusual changes in your personal heath occur.
- Discuss concerns about safety and security with your children and family members.
Awareness at the Workplace
- Know who is physically in your place of business and where they are.
- Call attention to suspicious behaviors, such as those who linger extensively in stores or businesses without buying.
- Be aware of suspicious activity around your place of business. Always ask for identification from delivery persons you feel uncomfortable with or don't recognize.
- If you notice suspicious purchases of irregularly large quantities of chemicals or hazardous materials, talk to a store clerk or manager about your concerns.
- Lock and control unused rooms and closets in your business.
- For added precaution, request that all personnel carry personal identification information cards.
Concerns about Technology
- Always keep up-to-date computer virus software on your computer to guard against cyber scams and damage.
- Understand that electronic surveillance has become an important part of improving national security as cell phones and email have the potential to be used for illegal communications.
